Affirmations are a great way to retrain your brain to think more positively.

In this post, we’ll take a look at how to use affirmation cards, how to make affirmation cards, and where to keep them in order to add a boost of inspiration to your daily life.

What Are Affirmation Cards?

Affirmation cards are printed (or hand-written) affirmations on small-to-medium sized paper.

If you’re not very familiar with affirmations in general, here’s a basic rundown:

What Are Affirmations?

Affirmations are simple phrases that can be used to uplift, inspire, and heal you.

They are usually short sentences, and are positively-worded rather than negatively.

Meaning, instead of “I am not un-lovable,” a better affirmation would be, “I am lovable.”

These simple phrases help rewire the brain to think more positively, confidently, and mindfully.

Affirmation cards can come in handy when you need to carry some positive reminders with you throughout the day.

If you want to know how to use affirmation cards effectively, it’s important to understand mindfulness.

Parroting affirmations without really processing what they mean isn’t going to do much good.

It’s about intention.

Focus on each word as you say it, preferably out loud, and pay attention to what the affirmation is really about.

When I use affirmations, I like to say them out loud three times.

Each time, I say it slower, sometimes closing my eyes to really focus on the words I’m saying.

It’s one thing to read and say the words, “I am lovable.”

It’s another to really sit with those words, and try to embody what they mean.

“I am lovable.”

“I am lovable.”

“Yeah, I am lovable!”

Use affirmation cards for daily inspiration by keeping them somewhere you’re sure to see them.

Where to Keep Your Affirmation Cards

The point of making your own affirmation cards is to be able to see them whenever you need to!

So, think of the places that’ll most benefit from some inspiration.

Scatter your affirmations around your bedroom, office, or even your bathroom!

(The bathroom mirror can be an especially relevant place for some affirmations – that way, you’ll be reminded to say some positive “I am” statements every morning when you’re getting ready and every night when you’re brushing your teeth!)

Here are some ideas for where to put affirmation cards:

  • Pin them to your wall or bulletin board.
  • Make a magnet out of them and put them on your fridge.
  • Keep them in your car for emergency inspiration when you’re on the road!
  • Use them as bookmarks for an extra boost when you’re reading books on self esteem, self help, or spirituality.
  • Put them in the corner of your mirror – this is especially great for self love affirmations or affirmations for beauty.
  • Turn them into stickers and put them on your laptop, water bottle, or anywhere else!

Personally, I have several handwritten affirmation cards that I keep in various places – some are being used as bookmarks, others are scattered on my countertops… and some I’ve misplaced due to ADHD – at least I’ll get an inspiration boost when I accidentally find them someday!

You can also keep them all together in a box, and set the box on your dresser, desk, or keep them in your bag when traveling.

Now, you understand how to use affirmation cards, and where to keep them.

But where do you get them?

Where to Buy Affirmation Cards

There are plenty of professionally-made affirmation card decks out there!

Browse Etsy for some beautiful, themed affirmation cards, or Amazon, which sells a ton of fun decks by Affirmators.

Big-box stores like Target and Walmart are also known to carry a few affirmation card decks.

Check your local bookstores and gift shops for affirmation cards, too – they’re usually sold near tarot or oracle decks, or in the mental wellbeing / self help sections!

Or, you can always make your own affirmation cards, yourself!

How to Make Affirmation Cards

Creating affirmation cards is as easy as writing some positive affirmations down on paper, or printing them out!

Anyone can do it – it’s even a fun craft for kids!

Make it a family craft night by creating your own affirmations together.

Or, spend some time alone and treat making your affirmation cards as a form of real self care.

How to Create Your Own Affirmation Cards by Hand

Getting hands-on is a great way to make your own affirmation cards whenever you see them.

Putting them together yourself adds a personal touch that will help you feel more connected to the cards.

So grab your paper, pens, scissors and stickers, and get creative!

You can use blank index cards, or cut larger paper into the dimensions that work best for you.

Simple printer paper can work, or you can find some nice stationary, or even use thick card stock and get really crafty with it!

You don’t have to limit yourself to rectangles, either.

Try making square, hexagon, circle, diamond, or heart shaped cards!

Be as creative and extravagant as you want!

Write your affirmations with bright markers, glittery pens, or try your hand at calligraphy!

You can also liven up your affirmation cards by decorating them with fun stickers or washi tape.

Have fun with it, but make sure the affirmations themselves are the focus of the cards!

You don’t want to be distracted by too much decoration around the border and not be able to fix your eyes on the words – those are the important part.

How to Make Affirmation Cards Online

If handwriting isn’t your jam, go online to create your own affirmation cards!

Canva is great for putting together affirmation card designs, with plenty of fun and inspiring templates available for you to type your own affirmations into!

Or, start from scratch on an editor like Photoshop!

(Personally, if I’m not using Canva, I like using Pixlr’s free online editor as an alternative to Photoshop.)

Once you’ve got your designs ready, print your affirmations on regular paper at home, or transfer the design files to a USB and get your cards printed on higher quality paper at a professional printer!

Laminating Your Affirmation Cards

If you want to keep your affirmation cards safe from wear and tear, you can laminate them.

Laminating pouches are generally pretty cheap online if you want to do this at home, or you can take your cards to an office supply store like Staples or FedEx and they’ll do it for a reasonable fee.

Or you can simply get some clear packing tape and tape over the cards!

Remember: Affirmations Are a Starting Point

Keeping positive statements and reminders around the house is a great way to boost your mood, but the magic isn’t in the cards themselves, or even in the words written on them.

It’s about being mindful, introspective, and committed to your own wellbeing.

May your affirmation cards help you remember to prioritize your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.
