Are You An Artist?

Let’s focus for a moment on what is one of the most important affirmations for artists:

Affirm: “I Am an Artist!”

If you make art in any form, no matter your perceived skill, or how often you do it, you’re an artist.

You are an artist!.

This is something I’m still working to internalize.

I have always had an interest in art, but it was never my biggest passion. (That would be writing.)

My art doesn’t have a clearly defined style. I don’t make as much art as many of my artist friends and peers. I’m not pursuing a career in art. I still have a lot to learn in terms of technique…

All of these factors add up to my feeling like I’m not “good enough” to claim the title of Artist™.

But I am an artist.

Every time I put pencil to paper, paint to canvas, or stylus to tablet, I am proving that I am, in fact, an artist.

And in every idea I get for a work of art, whether I actually bring that idea to fruition or not, I am demonstrating that I have an artist’s spirit.

You don’t have to reach a certain “level” of artistry in order to be an artist.

It’s not a competition.

There are no rules in art besides: Create.

Do you create?

Congratulations, you are an artist!

Affirm that shit!

Alright, now that we’ve established our identities as Artists, let’s look at 20 other artist affirmations.

Artist Affirmations for Confidence

In art, there will be moments when you feel like you’re brilliant, as well as times when you’re not sure you should even bother to start another project.

This is true whether you’re just starting out in your artistic journey, or you’ve been at it for a while.

Here are 5 artist affirmations you can use when you need a confidence boost:

  1. I like my art. I’m proud of my art.
  2. I get better at making art every day.
  3. I am not afraid to try new things in the realm of creativity.
  4. The more art I make, the more I develop my skills and technique.
  5. I am bold with my creation, throwing color on canvas with confidence.

To be clear, you don’t have to get better with each creation.

Maybe sometimes you end up making something that feels like a step backward from your prior work. That’s okay.

Rather than obsessing over each piece being better than the last, why not simply celebrate them for being the latest in your line of beautiful, diverse creations?

But I know how perfectionism can stifle your confidence as an artist, so let’s focus on that issue next…

Affirmations for Artists about Perfection

You’ve probably heard Bob Ross speak fondly and encouragingly about making “happy accidents”.

Sometimes, what we end up creating doesn’t exactly match the vision we had for a piece. That can be frustrating, but it’s part of the beauty of art; a reflection of our humanity.

And really, isn’t that what art is all about? Depicting the fullness of life?

Here are 5 affirmations for perfectionists:

  1. My art is perfectly imperfect.
  2. It is okay if my art doesn’t turn out the way I’d planned; I can always make more.
  3. The “mistakes” I make in my art can be transformed into happy accidents.
  4. Mistakes are part of life; I am comfortable with reflecting that in my art.
  5. There is beauty in my art’s imperfections.

Often, the perceived “imperfections” in your art are what make your creations unique!

With that, let’s move on to the topic of originality.

Affirmations for Artists about Originality

No one looks at the world quite like you do.

There is no one out there who has the same exact experiences as you. The things that shape your view of life, your passions, your interests – your approach to art and creativity.

That is your power. That is what you and no one else can bring to the world, and no one can take that away from you.

Here are 5 affirmations about originality:

  1. The things I create are unique.
  2. I have a whole world of imaginative ideas within me.
  3. No one can come up with the same things I do, in the exact way that I do.
  4. My mind is brimming with creative concepts that only I can bring into the world.
  5. There are things I’ve made, and things I’ve yet to create, that would not exist without me.

Self Worth Affirmations for Artists

How much is your art worth?

More importantly, how much are YOU worth?

Many creative types fall into the trap of associating their self-worth with the perceived value of the things they create.

But, contrary to what capitalism might tell us, we are worth so much more than what we produce.

And, no matter what others might say, both ourselves and our art are inherently valuable.

We have value because we exist. Our art has value because it exists.

The world would be a little less vibrant, a little less interesting, a little less diverse, without you and the things you create.

Let’s conclude with 5 artist affirmations for self worth:

  1. My art has value.
  2. My art is worth investing in.
  3. I deserve to be compensated for my artwork.
  4. My life has value, regardless of the success of my art.
  5. I don’t need to prove my worth through my creations; I am inherently worth so much.

Remember: You are an Artist!

There are no qualifications for being an artist other than making art!

Celebrate everything you create!

Your art doesn’t have to be perfect.

You bring a unique perspective into the world with each new work of art.

Your art is valuable simply for being something you created, and you have value outside of your art.

Hopefully some of these affirmations will encourage you in your artistic journey, and inspire you to bring more of your brilliant, unique ideas into the world.
